Hate Crime Awareness Week

As part of last week's National Hate Crime Awareness campaign, Eastbourne Neighbourhood Policing Team officers visited a number of local community venues to raise awareness, engage with residents to explain what hate crime is, highlight its impact on victims and communities, as well as encourage and explain how anyone affected can report it.

During the week Officers stopped by an Eastbourne Wheels for All session held at the Eastbourne Sports Park, along Cross Levels Way 

Delivered by East Sussex Bikeability team (East Sussex Cycle Training) the session was open to all children and adults with varying disabilities and differing needs, to take part in a different cycling activities on site using a range of specially adapted cycles.

Thanks again to everyone for having us, it was lovely to meet you all, and to have the chance to connect with communities potentially more vulnerable to hate crimes, as well as to have the opportunity to raise awareness of both the week and the support available for those affected.

Fraud awareness

Alongside staff officers from local teams and our fraud prevention coordinator, PCSOs from your Neighbourhood Policing Team spent time in The Beacon Shopping Centre earlier this week, speaking to, and raising awareness of some of the latest scams with residents, businesses and shoppers.

Fraud is when someone tricks or scams you out of money or something else valuable.

It could be a 'personal fraud' or scam, which might include someone pretending to be your bank to trick you into transferring money into their account, or a ‘too good to be true’ email targeting both your money and your trust.

Or maybe a 'business fraud' or scam, which could be someone tricking you into thinking they have already made payment for goods, or tricking you into believing you have given them the wrong change on payment of goods.

With scams ranging from the simplest confidence trick to the most sophisticated high-tech online fraud, it pays to keep up to date with the latest news and advice.

Arson appeal

Police are continuing to investigate a fire at a disused building in Eastbourne.

Emergency services were called at about 5.40pm on Sunday, 19 October to the former Moira House school in Upper Carlisle Road.

A fire started in the building, and it is believed to have been started deliberately.

Detective Sergeant Tod Stewart said: “We are continuing to pursue lines of enquiry, and are appealing for anyone with information to come forward.

“We are also keen to trace four boys as witnesses, who may have information to help our investigation.”

Information relating to the fire can be reported to Sussex Police online, quoting serial 936 of 19/10.
